This boat type is very popular in Sweden and was an Olympic class for women from the Barcelona 1992 Olympics until the Athens 2004 Olympics. The Olympic status was then replaced by Laser radial. On the men's side, it is mainly popular among young sailors. The E-dinghy is currently Sweden's largest class for youth sailors aged 15 to 21. National and international championships are held annually for both women and men.
Compared to the Laser radial, the E-dinghy is said to be more sensitive laterally, partly because of its more rounded bottom. Therefore, it may be easier to influence the sailing with body movements in the E-dinghy. Other features that distinguish the E-dinghy from the Laser include its many trimming options and the fact that all trimming lines are led down to the cockpit. The class rules for the E-dinghy's mast are much more permissive and advanced compared to the Laser.
