Clabbie Dubh was the first of the new generation of Rob Humphrey designed yachts built by Oyster Marine Ltd.
The Rob Humphreys-designed replacement for the Oyster 45/47, the 46 carries her beam aft, enhancing downwind stability and permitting a much larger owner’s stateroom. Her longer waterline, wider beam and bigger rig add up to a significant improvement in performance.
Her large centre cockpit benefits from the extra beam and lessons learnt from ergonomic studies and years of sailing experience. Good headroom throughout with a three-cabin accommodation layout, which allows six to sleep in comfort, without recourse to the saloon. Twenty-nine 46s were launched between 2005 and 2012, when the design was further tweaked to create the 475. She was built and launched for me in June 2005. She had in the region of £200,000 of additional equipment added to her original specification during her build. She has been sailed and maintained by my partner and I, in Scotland and the Mediterranian, since her launch.
Clabbie Dubh is set up for short handed sailing, with all controls coming back to the cockpit. While she is big enough to sail oceans and has been built to comply with the requirements in the European Union's Recreational Craft Directive (EURCD) to meet Design Category A - "Ocean" she is also small enough to have access to most marinas.
Additional, but not exhaustive list of equipment etc. added to the original specification:
Raymarine navigation electronics, including Chart Plotter (with repeater in cockpit), GPS, Radar, AIS receiver. Autopilot. Lifetags. Bowthruster. Electric winches. Davits. Shaft drive (NOT saildrive). Feathering Maxprop. Storm jib with removable inner forestay. Cruising Chute. Mastervolt 5Kva generator. Inverter. Battery charger. Water maker. Dive compressor. Bimini. pushpit seats. Additional cupboard and drawer storage. Additional access to Aft Heads from navigation centre, (essential when sailing on passage). Matching wood surround to ports in main saloon. lightweight Rib with 9hp outboard.
