Bruce Roberts designed, Bermudian cutter rigged cruising yacht with an aft cockpit, trunk cabin and flush foredeck, moderately long fin keel and a keel-hung rudder. The auxiliary engine is a four-cylinder 50 hp Yanmar diesel. Reportedly the yacht was completed by RJ and HD Edwards from a professionally built hull at Bedford, UK, and was launched in 1985.
VAHANA was purchased by her current and only second owner in New Zealand in 2014. The outgoing owners had only just completed a big refit on their yacht in 2012 at Norsand Boatyard, Whangarei. They had sailed the yacht from the UK to New Zealand via the Atlantic, Panama Canal and Pacific Islands. The refit included an osmosis job, famed in NZ, at a cost of around 20k NZD. A non exhaustive list of refit jobs is listed in the descriptions..
This design has appealed to many serious cruising sailors, and is a timeless example of a well found cruising yacht. There are countless numbers of this design throughout the world and ever since Roberts first designed her in the late seventies it has been a favourite with cruising folk. If you are in the market for a cruising boat that is strong, safe, comfortable, good to live aboard then VAHANA deserves your serious consideration. Good cruising designs don't date. This is one of them.
