Beautiful Sweden Yachts 50, built in Stenungsund, Sweden for sale. This is one of the most impressive yachts that Swedish boatyards produced in the 90s. The Sweden Yachts 50 is a timeless classic that not only out-sails most others but also offers a lot of comfort.

SY Fragancia is a great example of a Sweden Yachts 50 and is the boat for those who want top-tier quality and craftsmanship. This is a fast and luxurious ocean cruiser, perfect for long trips, holiday sailing, or even as a liveaboard. Fragancia has been heavily upgraded in recent years, so you have the opportunity to purchase a boat where the previous owner has spent far too much money, only to pass it on to you.

The list of everything that’s been done is too long to include here, but here are the key pieces of equipment and upgrades made in recent years:

Complete new Raymarine navigation equipment: 12" plotter inside, 10" outside at the helm. New radar, 3 MFD screens, hydraulic autopilot, VHF, AIS. New Seldén Furlex 404s furling system and new forestay. New Seldén Furlex 304s furling system on the cutter stay. New service battery 24V 400Ah lithium batteries (about 10kWh, equivalent to 800Ah at 12V). Victron Multiplus 24/5000, 5000W inverter/charger. Fischer Panda 5000i Neo generator with only 190 hours. The main engine, Volvo Penta TMD31B, has been overhauled and run about 50 hours since overhaul (planed cylinder head, new pistons, starter, acid wash of coolers, connecting rod bearings, seals, repainted, etc.). Max Prop 4-blade feathering propeller. New sprayhood, lazy bag, and cockpit tent made by Kapell & Annat in Sweden, used for only two seasons. New deck hatches. New Rocna 33kg anchor and 80m chain. Most of the running rigging (everything in use) has been replaced.

In addition to these equipment upgrades, the boat has just completed a refit after a year and a half in a heated workshop at Tjörns Yachtservice AB. This is the workshop that took over after-market services for Sweden Yachts when they went bankrupt, and many of the staff were involved in building this boat. This workshop was chosen because of their expertise in Sweden Yachts. While the boat was in Sweden, the following work was done to preserve this classic for another 30 years:

The keel was removed, all keel bolts inspected, and the attachment points upgraded during reassembly (with new custom made extra-thick washers to better distribute forces). Reinforced cross beams in the keel area (due to the engine placement, this is an area prone to material fatigue over time). The entire underwater hull was blasted clean for optimal drying of the hull. There were no signs of osmosis, but after 30 years in the water, it was good to remove the layers of antifouling and inspect the hull carefully to ensure no osmosis issues in the future. All through-hull fittings were replaced: bronze above the waterline (not the cheap brass ones sold in most boat shops), while below the waterline, Tru-Design composite fittings were used. Six layers of West System 105 Epoxy + West System 422 Barrier Coat were applied to be 100% sure there would be no future osmosis issues. Five layers of Coppercoat antifouling were applied. Coppercoat guarantees 10 years, but many have positive experiences with 15 or even 20 years before new layers are needed. This way, you won’t need to apply new antifouling every year, and you could potentially change anodes using a diver, saving money by avoiding hauling the boat - perfect for those who plan to do long-distance sailing. There was moisture in the core material of the cabin roof, so the teak was removed, and the core material was replaced with Divinycell. All deck equipment (winches, blocks, vents, etc.) was disassembled, cleaned, and serviced if in good condition or replaced if not. To prevent future water ingress, all holes were enlarged, the core material removed, and then filled with epoxy before drilling new holes for the screws. This ensures that if water enters through the bolts, it won’t reach the core and weaken the roof again. Some cracks and wear marks on the sides of the cabin roof were repaired, and the entire "wall" was sprayed with new gelcoat. All small damages we found on the hull after 30 years of use were repaired, including some marks on the bow, which now looks flawless. The rig was disassembled, washed, and thoroughly checked by a professional rigger. The anchor roller/stem fitting at the bow was removed and reinforced, as we felt it was originally slightly under-dimensioned (though it had lasted over 30 years).

The rudder was also removed because we found moisture inside. This is a very common issue on sailboats, and most would say it's not worth fixing, but we wanted a boat we could trust 100%, so we took the job of opening the rudder, removing all wet core material, inspecting the rudder stock for corrosion (everything looked good), and filling the rudder with expanding epoxy foam before re-glassing it. The two top rudder bearings are ball bearings, and they were replaced with new ones in stainless steel housings (instead of the old cast iron ones). The bottom rudder bearing is a bronze bearing in the skeg, which we kept, but there was some play in it due to wear over time, which we fixed by casting in a new bushing.

The boat has been under constant improvement in recent years with long-distance cruising in mind. Everything has been done with the goal of spending time sailing rather than working on the boat, so no shortcuts were taken, and only quality parts were used. Over 130 000 Euro has been spent on upgrades in recent years, so you have the chance to buy a boat where almost everything has already been done.

Layout

Sweden Yachts 50 has a long and deep cockpit that gives a sense of security. There's space for a dining table with seating for 8. The large helm provides a good feel for steering and easy handling even in strong winds and waves. At the helm, there is a Raymarine Axiom Hybrid-touch 10" plotter, autopilot control, and three Raymarine MFDs to display any data you want. There’s also an additional handheld VHF unit mounted outside.

Below deck, the boat has a very high standard with first-class craftsmanship in mahogany and teak, just as one expects from Swedish quality boats. A large chart table is located immediately down the stairs on the starboard side, with a comfortable chair. From this position, you have access to a Raymarine 12" Axiom plotter where you can monitor charts, radar, wind, autopilot, etc. This spot also works well as a desk for those who need to work while on vacation/trips.

On the port side, there’s a large and functional galley, with a large freezer (~90L), and two refrigerators. A gas oven with three burners, a microwave, plenty of cupboard space, and an exclusive Corian countertop.

Further forward, you’ll find a large saloon with seating for 8-10 around a big saloon table, plus two armchairs along the starboard side. The entire area forward of the mast is dedicated to the owner's cabin. There’s a queen size bed on the port side, and closets and a dressing table on the starboard side. At the very front, there’s a bathroom with a large separate shower under a large hatch, allowing you to shower under the open sky, while also providing good ventilation to the cabin on warm summer days.

At the aft end of the boat, there are two large guest cabins, both with queen size beds and ample closet space. Between them, there’s a bathroom with a toilet mounted along the centerline of the boat, ideal for use as a day head while sailing regardless of which tack the boat is on.

Sailing Performance

This is a performance cruiser with excellent sailing characteristics. A powerful, solid rig with many trim options. The cutter stay with roller furling allows for a large Genoa (130%) on the forestay, providing good speed even in light winds, while it’s easy to furl the Genoa and switch to a smaller jib when beating upwind or in stronger winds. With the 2. or 3. reef in the mainsail and the staysail on the cutter stay, the boat handles strong winds well, with the forces near the center of the boat, providing comfortable sailing without overloading the helm. For extreme winds, a storm jib can also be attached to the inner most stay.

All heavy equipment is carefully planned and placed near the center of the boat. The engine is positioned over the keel, surrounded by water tanks, and the batteries are placed just forward of the mast. Placing the weight low and in the center of the boat improves sailing performance and provides a calmer and more comfortable movement in the sea.

Sails and Rig

Seldén masthead rig with upgraded, extra-strong boom Seldén Furlex furling systems on both the forestay and cutter stay Navtec hydraulic system for backstay and kicker Full-batten mainsail in Dacron by Gran Sails 130% Genoa on a furler by Gran Sails Jib on the cutter stay by Doyle Spinnaker and boom

Engine

The boat is equipped with a Volvo Penta TMD31A with 100 HP, which has been newly overhauled and upgraded to B spec for better compression and less smoke. The instrument panel has been replaced. The operating hours before the overhaul were estimated to be around 3,500 hours, and it has only run about 50 hours since the overhaul. The engine was overhauled due to poor compression in one (the 4.) cylinder. The boat has a maximum speed of around 9 knots and cruises comfortably at 7 knots.

The propeller is a 4-blade Max Prop (new in 2016), which feathers to a neutral position while sailing. The 4 blades ensure smooth operation, and the variable-pitch propeller provides optimal performance both forward and backward. Combined with a balanced rudder and a large steering wheel, this makes the boat very easy to manoeuvre in harbours.

The auxiliary engine is a Fischer Panda 5000i Neo, which delivers 4kW. The boat is equipped with a very powerful battery charger, so the number of hours you need to run the generator is minimal. When you do run the generator, it charges the battery at about 3kW, meaning you can fully charge the large battery pack from 0 to 100% in about 3 hours (the battery has enough capacity to power the boat for several days).

The boat is ready for viewing at Vollen Marina in Oslo, Norway.
Feel free to contact us for a pleasant boat chat and to schedule a viewing.
