Island Spirit IS380 Electric Drive

This well-presented and ahead-of-its-time 2015 Island Spirit 380 catamaran was designed and developed with the Oceanvolt SEA electric drive system instead of the standard Diesel auxiliary engines, for the owner of an Eco resort in the Gulf of Thailand.

It has been used seasonally for short cruises in front of the resort and then housed and professionally cared for in Ocean Marina, Jomtien for the rest of each year since it was launched. Since covid the owner's circumstances have now changed, requiring him to pass on his pride and joy to a new owner.

The owner notes the excellent economy the boat gets; "when the winds are light the screecher and electric engines create apparent wind, hence the generator uses about 25% diesel consumption that the twin diesels consume, as the generator is set to function at peak performance to charge batteries, it has much better fuel efficiency then 2 diesel motors that burn fuel according to the throttle setting, [which are always inefficient especially at idle] this really makes a difference running genset efficiently, as less maintenance too! so we can motor sail smoothly and quietly with as little as 500watt x2 = 1kw/h. So for the power use of a rice cooker, we get 2-3x smooth speed. This means that 1-2 hours of genset can give us 10hrs of motor sailing at 5-6kts/hr, as the boat keeps her momentum when the winds die down and the apparent wind velocity keeps her moving. This is super nice as no sounds, smells or vibrations and can get to our destination even with light to no winds. Then, there's always instant propulsion power just by moving the throttles- no lag time waiting for engines to start. Then can smoothly silently go in/out of anchorages without disturbing anyone with engine noises and smoke/smells. When we sail above 7-8kts/hr, we can use the drives to charge the batteries, and this works best above 10kts/hr and she can do over 12kts/hr"

A recent upgrade to 48V 200AH LiFePO4 Batteries now gives the boat a total capacity of over 40Kwh energy storage.
